“ When individuals with developmental disabilities graduate from their educational programs, there is little in the community that provides meaningful and creative opportunities and continued learning experiences. Ability Arts was born out of the need to provide a place where people can gather and create, exhibit, and assimilate visual art knowledge that can also translate into transferable independent living skills. Many who come to the program (which River Gallery School for Art has incorporated into their curriculum) have limited financial means to participate. Frances Hicks Memorial Fund helps bridge this need and has supported many students with the opportunity to be connected in purposeful programming.” ~ Robyn Weisel, Founder, Director and Instructor of the Ability Arts Program at River Gallery School of Art

"In 2004, Darlene Jenson and Laura Lawson Tucker created the inclusive Theatre Adventure Program of New England Youth Theatre in Brattleboro, Vermont. Theatre Adventure is the only theater arts program in the tri-state area for youth and adults with developmental challenges.

The Frances Hicks Memorial Fund has been an essential partner with Theatre Adventure since 2004. The Hicks Fund has given countless tuition assistance awards to many Theatre Adventure students. This financial assistance to families has helped to make Theatre Adventure classes and summer camps financially accessible.

Operating an educational arts program for students with disabilities requires tremendous creativity, not only with programming, but also with finding resources to help families enroll their family member in the Theatre Adventure community.

However, one shining example of a tremendously valuable resource in the region is The Frances Hicks Memorial Fund. What a joy it is to see the growth and skill building in the students the Hicks Fund has supported!

The Board of Directors of the Hicks Fund demonstrates a deep commitment and passion for the well being of youth and adults with developmental disabilities in Windham County. As a result, youth and adults with developmental challenges are finding their rightful place in the community as capable, caring, and contributing members."
